Updates: New Layout and New Blog Author in Town

So yesterday was a big day at Digesting the Words… New layout!!

But before I get to that: I’m happy to introduce my younger sister Uzma who will be joining me in reviewing books. Uzma is currently taking care of book review requests (mostly) whilst I get my University reading done. Uzma’s About page is currently under construction but she has her own blog Scarcely Visible which you can check out. She’s already written two book reviews here (one received 5 ★’s!) so don’t forget to take a look at those.

Uzma’s Reviews:

Digesting the Words has been all about me since I’ve been a solo author here with occasional guest posts. With Uzma around I felt like I needed to make changes around the site to make it less focussed on me. I settled on a few small changes to the theme yesterday afternoon, but the small changes quickly became one huge change!

I promised myself in my Book Blogger Resolutions to change my site layout and now I’ve finally done it! I absolutely love this new theme because it’s modern, simplistic, and it’s also responsive! Responsive themes are designed to give readers the optimal viewing experience. The theme itself adapts in size and characteristics to suit the device it is being viewed from. So what this means is that your user experience will be able easier depending on your device. E.g. the larger your screen the larger the font size you see, and the smaller your screen the more streamlined the site is. It works the same way if you’re using a computer screen and make your window thinner – the theme will adapt to make it easier for you to navigate!

I can’t tell you how happy this makes me! I hate visiting websites on my Smart Phone or iPad only to find an incompatible layout. Zooming in and out of a web page and straining to read the information given is unnecessary in this day and age of web design. I’ve still got a few kinks to iron out but that will all be done in time. (Or possibly today because I’m obsessive like that…)

The only downside to the modernity is the fact that the Digesting the Words logo looks a bit aged. The logo was down for an hour and in that time I felt like Digesting the Words lacked the personality I wanted it to have. So even if it’s aged, I’m happy to have the logo sticking around for now! I’m planning to modernise the logo itself a bit by the end of Summer to suit the theme better. I don’t want to abandon it completely, because I love the concept so much. I’m a sucker for cute things and somehow I managed to make the stomach organ look cute, so it’s not retiring anytime soon!

On that happy note, two questions for you:

What do you think of the new layout?

What type of device are you using to visit?

I’m liking the new layout because of its responsiveness. 🙂 I’m currently viewing your blog on my windows laptop, and everything looks great, modern and simplistic.

Also, a big welcome to Uzma! I look forward to seeing more of you around the blog. 🙂
