Read my reviews of the rest of the trilogy here: Divergent (book 1) and Insurgent (book 2)
I had to give myself time to think before writing this review because I just couldn’t find the words. I have never been more livid about the ending of a book. I spent hours reading and then reviewing this series and THIS is the ending I’m rewarded with?! NO. JUST NO.
I feel like this series has been one big fat waste of time, so I take back all of my recommendations. Don’t bother reading the series because this is not an ending anyone would appreciate.

Perhaps beyond the fence, she and Tobias will find a simple new life together, free from complicated lies, tangled loyalties, and painful memories.

And once again, Tris must battle to comprehend to complexities of human nature - and of herself - while facing impossible choices about courage, allegiance, sacrifice, and love.
Book Review
Allegiant started by building my hopes from Insurgent even higher. I didn’t love how Insurgent ended but I felt like things could get better. So when Allegiant began with Tris and Four working on their relationship I was ecstatic. It was exactly what I wanted – communication! Plus we got to read every alternate chapter from Four’s point of view. His thoughts and feelings – which up until now had made very little sense – were suddenly all revealed. As if all that wasn’t enough, we finally had some idea about what was going on outside the city.
But once our group left the city, nothing lived up to my expectations.
The fact that it was all just an experiment?!?! WHAT?? WHAAAAT
Everything that was important to the factions and to us reading became meaningless in a second. All of the symbolism and the history, it was all manipulated. There was so much potential for something greater. I honestly think I would have been happier if it had just been a barren wasteland!
Instead, we get an unfriendly clinical laboratory atmosphere inside an airport. It sounds like an interesting setting, but everything about it is predictable and boring. There is so much waiting and thinking which was very disappointing. For a series that had previously proven to be action packed, reading our characters sit and wait around was frustrating for me.
Then there’s my biggest issue. Tris’s death. Why?! WHY?!?!
I’m not ashamed to admit that I was in denial about her death until the very end. I wanted her to redeem herself. To let go of her thoughtlessness. To stop trying to destroy herself. To grow up. So of course I couldn’t accept the fact that she was dead. It was the perfect death, and her memorial was even more perfect, but I hated it all because I desperately wanted her to live.
So, I’m disappointed in the series and I don’t really have much more to say than that.
If you’re looking for an explanation like I was, here’s a blog post Veronica Wroth wrote about the ending of Allegiant. It makes the ending a lot softer and easier to take so it’s definitely worth reading.

I don’t like the ending of the series. Tris didn’t deserve that kind of ending.
